5 Tips for that Winter Glow ✨

The winter winds and chills are fast approaching - so here we've put together a few dermatologist-approved tips to incorporate into your regime that will help keep your skin soft and nourished!

Lower temperatures, harsher climates and dry indoor air during winter can wreak havoc on our skin. Thankfully, there are lots of simple ways to winter-proof your skin and keep you glowing all year-round!

Tip #1 - Layer up!

This goes for your skincare as much as it does for your clothes. Dry air and hot showers can strip your skin of it's natural oils so layering is key during winter as it helps trap the moisture yinto skin.

Products should always be applied in order of thickness (lighter, water-based serums and moisturisers go on first, followed by heavier emollient-like products. A rich facial oil is your best friend this season as it helps act as a barrier to the elements. Our Balancing & Brightening Face Oil is a light textured, fast absorbing oil blend which promotes radiant, hydrated skin and helps to seal in moisture and add extra nourishment. It's formulated with a range of skin-loving oils, including sea buckthorn fruit oil which contains a whole host of acids essential for skin hydration, elasticity and cell regeneration.

Tip #2 - Add moisture wherever possible 💦

The cold weather mean your skin is prone to dryness so; the more ways you can add moisture, the better!

  • Increasing your water intake will help to keep you hydrated. That means your 2L a day (coffee doesn't count sadly - switch this for a green-tea which also has antioxidant properties!)

  • Add moisture to your home and counter the effects of central heating by running a humidifier. This replenishes the moisture in the air which can be absorbed by your skin.

"In the cooler winter months, the outdoor air typically holds onto less water and is drier and colder" – Dr Naissan O. Wesley (board-certified dermatologist)

Tip #3 - Beauty from within

We all know looking good and feeling good go hand-in-hand and the best products in the world can't eradicate the effects of a poor diet. As well as boosting your immune-system and giving you the best chance of fighting off any bugs flying around this winter, meals packed full of vitamins and nutrients can help treat your skin from the inside-out.

I've been a long-time fan of The Wealth of Health blog by Jeffrey Boadi, who educates in a very non-judgemental and accessible way and creates plant-based recipes which are easy to follow and delicious! I don't know about you but I love my food and sometimes find vegan recipes not all that appealing; however, I'm a little obsessed with many of his meal ideas (insert Jerk Tempeh Bagel x Harissa Hummus and Truffle, Mushroom and Linguini Pasta). His platform is great for learning more about food and how to get the most out of whatever you're eating too which is great knowledge to have, whatever the season!

Tip #4 - Keep water temperatures warm, not hot!

A steaming-hot shower might sound like heaven after a cold, wintery day in or a long, busy commute; however, very hot water can dry out the skin, which we don't want! The same goes for when washing hands, especially if your hands feel tingly or itchy after washing. It's recommended to pat your hands and body after washing, rather than rubbing, as it helps to retain the moisture.

Always follow up with a thick moisturiser, like our Whipped Shea Butter, which helps soothe skin and lock in moisture. Our Nourishing Lip Balm can be used all-over to keep everything from chapped lips to dry hands, at bay.

Tip #5 - Mist regularly

This goes back to layering skincare but is so good it needs a point of it's own!

Spritzing your face with a hydrating toner in-between products and throughout the day can help keep skin moisturised. Always opt for an alcohol-free toner and one that includes a humectant ingredient like glycerin, which is found in our Rose & Niacinamide Toner, as these tend to be less drying and ensures the moisture actually stays on your skin.

Hopefully you've found a few tips you can easily incorporate to keep your complexion glowing and healthy all season long. As always, do what works for you - this is by no means a compulsory or exhaustive list - some people just "got it"!
